Immunoglobin Measurement with RID Kits
In the past, immunoelectrophoresis was used to detect the immunoglobulin class, however this test ... has been replaced by immunoglobulin quantification by single radial immunodiffusion (RID), which we use here at Cornell University.
Immunoglobin measurement is done for two reasons, i) to detect immune deficiencies and ii) determine "the nature of a paraprotein in monoclonal gammopathies." The first is most common to measure 'IgG in foals, llamas and calves for failure of transfer of passive immunity.' The second, offers detection of 'idiopathic or secondary conditions' through the "quantification of the immunoglobulin class in a documented monoclonal gammopathy (by serum protein electrophoresis)."
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine's Animal Health Diagnostic Center offers 'immunoglobulin quantification in dogs, cats, horses, cattle and llamas (for the latter , IgG only). Using RID kits from our Triple J Farms' RID and another lab they've established their own reference intervals for dogs and cats.
